American Express has announced the opening of its payment scheme to financial institutions operating in Georgia. The decision, made public on July 25, 2025, shows the global company’s intent to collaborate with Georgian banks interested in issuing and acquiring American Express cards.
The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has welcomed the development, saying that it is a meaningful advance in enhancing competition within the nation’s payments industry. As the country’s financial regulator, the NBG plays an important role in upholding competition standards and ensuring open access to financial infrastructure.
American Express’s expansion comes as Georgia continues to match its payments legislation with European Union standards. These regulations prioritize transparency, equal access and the elimination of discriminatory practices across payment systems. By granting local banks access to a globally recognized payments network, the move is expected to diversify consumer options and stimulate innovation across the sector.
“This is a strategic milestone not only for the local banking system but also for consumers who will benefit from more competitive and varied payment solutions,” said an NBG spokesperson.
