An investigation into the attack on opposition politician and “Coalition for Change” leader Nika Melia in Samtredia was launched two years after the incident, TV Pirveli reports. According to the broadcaster, Melia’s former head of security, Gabriel Kobaidze, has been summoned for questioning, while Nika Melia himself was questioned two weeks ago.
Nika Melia’s lawyer, Beka Kvinikadze, said the investigation was initially launched under an article related to violence, but the Prosecutor’s Office later reclassified the charges, and the investigation continued under the article concerning obstructing an election campaign through violence.
The lawyer said they believe the so-called “titushka” was sent by Georgian Dream, which is why the Interior Ministry initially launched the investigation under an incorrect and less serious charge.
The attack on the opposition politician took place in Samtredia on August 11, 2024. At the time, Nika Melia was attending the opening of the “Coalition for Change” office and meeting with residents as part of the election campaign.
