The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has said Russia’s nuclear weapons were created through “God’s grace” and played a decisive role in protecting the country from destruction – “JAMnews” reports that.
Speaking to worshippers at the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Convent in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, Kirill linked the country’s nuclear program to St. Seraphim of Sarov, one of Russia’s most revered Orthodox saints.
Referring to the nearby closed city of Sarov, home to Russia’s main nuclear weapons research center, the patriarch said it was there that “the shield of our Motherland was forged.”
“The scientists who worked here, in Sarov, created our Russian atomic bomb, which stopped the enemy’s plans to destroy and enslave our Fatherland,” Kirill said. He added that through the work of scientists, engineers, and workers, “God’s grace and mercy were revealed upon our country.”
Kirill said it was “no coincidence” that scientific research and engineering work had been carried out in the area, arguing that it had saved Russia from “terrible destruction,” after which “neither the country nor the people would have remained.”
