Latvia urges strong EU response to Georgia’s political crisis

Latvia is calling for a united response from European partners over what it describes as democratic weakening in Georgia. Ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Artjoms Uršuļskis, Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that Latvia has added 55 individuals to its list of declared persona non grata (PNG) due to recent developments in Georgia.

“We deeply regret what’s happening politically in Georgia,” Uršuļskis said, emphasizing growing concerns over the erosion of democratic norms. “There are clear problems with freedom of speech. Some political opponents are either imprisoned or have been forced into exile.”

Uršuļskis emphasized the need for a coordinated EU approach, noting that Latvia is already working with a large group of like-minded member states. “Only a strong joint position can have an impact on the ruling party in Georgia,” he added.
