The US House of Representatives has passed the “MEGOBARI Act” with strong bipartisan support—349 members voted in favor, while 42 opposed it.
The bill, officially titled the “Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act” (MEGOBARI), now awaits consideration in the US Senate.
Initially introduced last year by Congressman Joe Wilson, the legislation was reintroduced in the 119th Congress by Congressman Steve Cohen (Democrat), with co-sponsorship from Congressman Richard Hudson (Republican) and Congressman Marc Veasey (Democrat).
The MEGOBARI Act aims to demonstrate US support for the Georgian people. It includes provisions for imposing sanctions on Georgian officials involved in human rights abuses and efforts to undermine democratic institutions.
