GCCA: Dealer fined for odometer fraud in Georgia

The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA) has found individual entrepreneur Giorgi Basilidze in violation of consumer protection laws for falsifying a vehicle’s mileage before sale.

As the GCCA reports, Basilidze rolled back the odometer of a car from 190,952 km to just 55,000 km, misleading the buyer about the vehicle’s actual condition. “Mileage is a critical indicator of a car’s wear and tear, technical status, and market value,” the agency stated. “Misrepresenting this information is a serious breach of consumer rights.”

The agency emphasized that odometer readings are considered a material term in vehicle purchase agreements. Changingor concealing this information not only distorts the value of the car but also “violates legal obligations and constitutes a misleading commercial practice under Georgian law.”

The consumer who reported the issue is now seeking a proportional refund, an appeal the GCCA described as ‘lawful and justified’, with Basiladze being ordered to resolve the issue within a month and provide accurate mileage information in future sales.
