The rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue will begin on July 23, with all vehicle traffic on the avenue and part of Merab Kostava Street to be fully restricted from 12:00 a.m.
Speaking at a Tbilisi government meeting, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said the project was one of City Hall’s key pre-election promises, but its launch was delayed after several unsuccessful tenders.
“The work will begin on July 23, at 12:00 a.m., from which time all types of vehicle traffic will be completely restricted on Rustaveli Avenue and part of Merab Kostava Street,” Kaladze said, adding that the project, to be carried out by Tbilisi City Hall’s Infrastructure Development Service, is expected to be completed by the end of November.
The first stage will focus on replacing underground infrastructure, including water supply, sewage, drainage, and gas systems. Overhead utility cables will be moved underground, and underground waste collection bins will be installed.
The next phase will include resurfacing the roadway and sidewalks, replacing the street lighting network, upgrading pedestrian crossings, and improving accessibility for people with disabilities.
Earlier this month, LLC ‘Smart Solutions’ was announced as the winner of the nearly GEL 20 million tender for the rehabilitation project. The company was the sole bidder and submitted an offer of GEL 19,772,982, below the estimated value of GEL 19,954,650.
