Kobakhidze: Despite 20% occupation, Georgia pursues peaceful, pragmatic approach with Russia

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking at a panel discussion during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, emphasized Georgia’s peaceful and pragmatic approach to relations with Russia.

“We have a peaceful vision in our approach toward Russia. About 20% of our territory is occupied by the Russian Federation, and even under these conditions, we are pursuing a very peaceful and pragmatic path,” he stated.

Kobakhidze highlighted that although Georgia does not maintain diplomatic relations with Russia, it continues an intensive economic policy and maintains trade partnerships with the country.

“Georgia is a small country in the region with a wide network of free trade agreements, covering around 50 countries and regions, including the EU, CIS countries, UAE, and China. We play a strategic role, connecting Europe with Asia and the West with the East—not just economically, but in other areas too. To restore this function, we must deepen economic and political partnerships globally. That is our vision,” Kobakhidze said, noting also Georgia’s visa-free travel agreements with 50 countries.

He stressed that Georgia’s role in the South Caucasus has always been positive in promoting peace, and that all neighboring countries recognize and appreciate this contribution.

“This vision is working. Since 2021, our average economic growth rate has been 9.4%, which is high not only for the region but also for Europe. That’s why we are focused on this path and strengthening the peace format across the region,” he concluded.
