The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has vetoed the “Transparency of Foreign Influence” law.
The President announced this at a briefing held in the Orbelian Palace.
“Today I vetoed the Russian law. This law is, in its essence, in its spirit, a Russian law, which contradicts our constitution and all European standards, and represents an obstacle to the European path. The veto is legally correct and will be submitted to Parliament today. The law is not subject to any change, any improvement. This law should be abolished”, said the President.
The law “On transparency of foreign influence” was adopted by the parliament in the third reading last Tuesday, with 84 votes for and 30 deputies against. The “Transparency of Foreign Influence” law provides for the registration of non-entrepreneurial (non-commercial) legal entities and media outlets taking 20% or more of their income from foreign sources.
