Deputy FM highlights “aggravated” security, humanitarian situation in occupied territories ahead of Geneva Discussions

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia on Tuesday said the 59th round of the Geneva International Discussions – the platform that addresses security and humanitarian consequences of the 2008 Russia-Georgia conflict – would focus on the “aggravation” of the security and humanitarian situation in the country’s Russian-occupied territories.

He claimed that one of the main issues on the agenda will be the murder of Georgian citizen Tamaz Ginturi.

“Unfortunately, the security and humanitarian situation in the occupied territories is complex. Therefore, the round will not be easy. Unfortunately, as always, we do not anticipate the ease of discussing the topics. The murder itself will be the main thing that the Georgian delegation will ask. In addition, the issue for which GID exists in the first place, which is the six-point agreement implementation, is on the agenda. Killing will be one of the primary discussions in this round. In the first place, it is crucial to stress that the Russian Federation is entirely accountable, demanding the necessary retribution for those at fault. As for their investigation, of course, we neither recognize nor trust the results of their investigation,” said Lasha Darsalia.

The Georgian delegation is in Geneva under the leadership of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Lasha Darsalia. The meetings today will be devoted to technical discussions with the co-chairs, and the 59th round of the Geneva International Discussions will officially begin tomorrow.
