22 Villages Remain Isolated: Geologists to Study Landslide Processes in Gudamakari

In the Gudamakari administrative unit, on the Oshpiteli-Gudamakari road section, where a slope collapsed due to heavy rainfall yesterday, cleaning works are to start today.

Geologists of the National Environment Agency of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture have been in Gudamakari since morning to study intensified landslide processes on the spot.

“Geologists from the National Environment Agency operatively carried out initial surveys of the target area to assess the situation, and made appropriate recommendations for protective measures, in particular, clearing the road, fragmentation of overhanging boulders on the slope, and then arranging protective metal barriers,” the agency said in a statement.

Dusheti Municipality Mayor Zurab Sekhniashvili said yesterday that the cleaning of the road would start after the recommendations of geologists.

A rocky slope in the Gudamakari Gorge collapsed yesterday, March 23, blocking the road connecting the small town of Pasanauri with the Gudamakari Gorge.

As a result of the disaster, 22 villages have been cut off from the outside world. They remain in isolation but are being provided with electricity.
