Murdered Giga Otkhozoria’s mother: It’s surprising that we met Russians with a celebration

“It should cause some inconvenience, not because my son died today,” Julieta Chanturia, mother of Giga Otkhozoria, said about the issue of the first flight from Russia after the lifting of sanctions.

7 years have passed since the murder of Giga Otkhozoria. In connection with this day, the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality Tea Akhvlediani and representatives of the local government of Zugdidi were at the grave of Otkhozoria.

“During these 7 years, I live with hope, even though I don’t see any justice. And now I think it will be even more difficult to find and achieve it. Now this spark of hope has disappeared,” said Julieta Chanturia in response to the question of what she expects in relation to the case of her son’s murder.

Radio Atinati disseminates the comments of Otkhozoria’s mother.

“Today, together with my son, I cried for all those young people who sacrificed themselves for the love of the motherland. It is a little surprising that we met the Russians with a celebration. Today, for the first time, we will see a Russian plane landing, which will probably be accompanied by a delegation. Somehow I think it should be a little awkward, not because my son died today, no. In general, even if someone considers this event positive, I think they should have an awkward moment,” said Julieta Chanturia.

Giga Otkhozoria, an IDP from Gali district, who lived in Zugdidi, was shot six times by Abkhaz so-called border guard Rashid Kanjiogli in 2016.

Those involved in Otkhozoria’s murder have not been punished.

The Georgian side sentenced Rashid Rashid Kanjiogli to 14 years in prison in absentia and declared him internationally wanted.

Kanjiogli was not punished in de facto Abkhazia. He was sentenced to house arrest by a de facto court in Abkhazia in 2017, but the same year the de facto prosecutor’s office terminated the investigation and prosecution due to lack of evidence.

The fact of Giga Otkhozoria’s murder is recorded on video. The murder on the occupation line was filmed by a CCTV camera.
