Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has reiterated Ukraine’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the 18th anniversary of the August 2008 war, saying Kyiv will never accept Russia’s occupation of Georgian and Ukrainian territories.
“Eighteen years ago, Russian forces brutally invaded sovereign Georgia, violating international law as part of Moscow’s imperial policy aimed at subjugating other nations and peoples,” Sybiha wrote on X.
Ukrainian foreign minister claimed that Russia’s 2008 aggression against Georgia and the occupation of Georgian territories, followed by what he described as continued “creeping annexation,” paved the way for Russia’s subsequent aggression against Ukraine.
“Ukraine firmly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We will never accept Russia’s illegal occupation of Georgian and Ukrainian lands, nor the ‘Russian world,’ which brings only destruction, poverty, and human rights violations wherever it goes,” Sybiha said.
He also called on the international community to increase pressure on Moscow, impose tougher sanctions, and ensure accountability for Russia’s actions.
“Lasting European peace requires the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and the full restoration of international law,” Sybiha wrote.
