Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into alleged treason and sabotage following comments made by National Movement leader Giorgi Baramidze

The case concerns an interview Baramidze gave to Iago Khvichia, in which he discussed the Abkhazia war and prisoner exchange process, stating that “during the war, we did not have prisoners, our side did not take prisoners, our people shot them.” Baramidze later clarified his remarks, saying the situation he referred to had changed after his arrival in Abkhazia, which enabled the exchange of 200 Georgian prisoners with the separatist side.

“The investigation was launched based on a statement by the State Service of Veterans Affairs regarding the remarks made by Giorgi Baramidze about the Abkhazia war and the prisoner exchange process,” the Prosecutor’s Office said. “Investigative and procedural measures will be carried out, and further information will be provided to the public,” the statement added.

The investigation was opened under Articles 307¹ and 318 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which concern treason and creating a threat to Georgia’s state interests.
