Armenian company Telecom Armenia and Azerbaijani company Azertelecom have signed an agreement allowing internet traffic to be routed through each other’s territories.
The deal will enable Azerbaijan to provide its Nakhichevan exclave with internet access using Armenian infrastructure, RFE/RL Armenian service reports.
In a joint statement, the companies said the agreement covers the transit and transmission of internet traffic on a commercial basis.
The firms said the arrangement expands the geography of countries providing international internet transit and ensures connectivity through existing infrastructure in both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Telecom Armenia Deputy Director Aram Barseghyan told RFE/RL that the agreement will first require approval from Armenia’s National Security Service.
Barseghyan also said the deal is based on the logic of the TRIPP framework, although it is not directly part of the project.
TRIPP is a planned regional infrastructure initiative agreed between Armenia, Azerbaijan and the United States, aimed at improving connectivity between Azerbaijan and its Nakhichevan exclave through Armenian territory, including potential energy and transport links.
