An Indian medical student has been missing in Tbilisi for two weeks, with his family alleging he had a confrontation with his landlord before disappearing.

Indian media reports 23-year-old Dhvanit Rajdeep, originally from Ahmedabad in India’s Gujarat state, was last in contact with his family on May 14.

Rajdeep was studying medicine at Caucasus International University (CIU) after moving to Georgia from Ukraine.

His family says his brother is currently in Tbilisi searching for him, while the Indian Embassy in Georgia has also been informed of the case.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation.

Indian media reports the student had a dispute with the owner of the apartment he rented in Tbilisi, who is also an Indian citizen.

Rajdeep’s father, Mayur Rajdeep, alleges his son was harassed by the landlord and other people living in the apartment.

The family claims money, clothes and food were stolen from the student and that the landlord refused to return his deposit after he decided to move out.

Indian publication IndiaToday reports the family alleges Rajdeep was extorted for $6,500, locked in a room and had his phone confiscated.

The family says the student later took his passport and phone and planned to fly back to India. They say communication with him ended during a phone call.

On May 27, Caucasus International University stated that it had received information about the student’s disappearance on May 15 and immediately contacted emergency services.

The university says law enforcement agencies opened a case on the same day and an active investigation is underway.

CIU says it has been cooperating with investigators and remains in contact with the student’s family and the Indian Embassy.

The university says Rajdeep was last seen on May 14 at around 15:30 near the Caucasus Medical Center in Tbilisi’s Saburtalo district.
