The crash of a Russian drone onto residential buildings in Galați represented a clear and serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and European airspace, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said in a post on social media.
Kallas claimed that she spoke with Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu earlier today to express the European Union’s full solidarity with Romania following the incident.
“Russia stopped respecting borders a long time ago. Moscow must not be allowed to violate European airspace with impunity. Yesterday, EU foreign ministers pledged to increase pressure on Russia, step up support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe’s defense preparedness,” Kallas wrote.
The statement comes after a Russian drone reportedly crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați near the Ukrainian border, prompting discussions in Bucharest over the possible invocation of NATO’s Article 4, which provides for consultations among allies when a member state considers its security to be under threat.
