Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival for his film Fjord, marking his second victory at the festival after his 2007 win for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
Set in Norway, the film follows a deeply religious Romanian family accused of child abuse after moving to a small Norwegian town. The drama stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve.
Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev won the Grand Prix for Minotaur. During his acceptance speech, he called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “stop the carnage” in Ukraine.
The Jury Prize went to Valeska Grisebach for The Dreamed Adventure.
The Best Director award was shared between Paweł Pawlikowski for Fatherland and Spanish directing duo Javier Calvoand Javier Ambrossi for The Black Ball.
Best Actress honors were shared by Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto for All of a Sudden, while Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne jointly won Best Actor for Coward.
Twenty-two films competed in the festival’s main competition. The jury was chaired by South Korean director Park Chan-wook.
