The United States Embassy in Georgia has marked the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, highlighting decades of partnership and cooperation.
The embassy says that March 24, 1992, marks the date when the United States and Georgia formally established diplomatic ties, laying the foundation for a long-standing bilateral relationship.
The embassy also noted that the United States had recognized Georgia’s independence earlier, in December 1991, describing the move as a key step toward deepening relations between the two nations.
“Thirty-four years ago today, on March 24, 1992, the United States and Georgia established diplomatic relations, laying the foundation for decades of cooperation and partnership between our countries,” the statement reads.
The White House, in an address at the time, emphasized that the United States would move quickly to open an embassy in Tbilisi and support Georgia’s integration into international financial institutions, further strengthening the emerging partnership.
At the end of November 2024, the United States suspended its strategic partnership and broad cooperation with Georgia, including in the field of defense, and also reviewed its financial assistance. This followed the decision by Georgian Dream to halt negotiations on Georgia’s accession to the European Union.
