Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur for human rights defenders, has expressed serious concern over the freezing of bank accounts belonging to five charity organizations in Georgia, including Human Rights House Tbilisi.
“I am very concerned by the freezing of bank accounts of five NGOs in Georgia, including Human Rights House Tbilisi, which carries out vital human rights work,” Lawlor stated. “That this measure is part of an investigation into the November-December 2024 protests is deeply disturbing. I call for this decision to be reversed and for attacks on human rights defenders and peaceful protesters to be prosecuted,” she said.
The Georgian Government still has not followed up on Lawlor’s concerns, sparking criticism in civil society groups, who view it as part of a bigger crackdown of independent organizations in the country.
