Reuters reports that the European Union plans to significantly expand sanctions against Russia in the coming months, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told German newspaper Die Welt.
Kallas said she is proposing the EU’s most far-reaching sanctions listings against Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.
She added that, if adopted, the new measures would immediately increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by one-third.
“The pressure must keep growing until Moscow ends its war,” Kallas said.
Kallas did not provide further details on the timing or content of the proposed sanctions package.
In July, the EU approved its latest package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including restrictions targeting Russia’s banking sector and cryptocurrency networks.
