InterpressNews reports that the U.S. Embassy in Georgia has confirmed the authenticity of a U.S. State Department statement, featured on Globalnews.ge, concerning Georgia’s current political uncertainty. The embassy’s press center has provided the confirmation to IPN.
The State Department has voiced Washington’s position on Georgia’s ongoing turmoil, expressing concern over what is described as “continued anti-democratic actions” by the ruling party.
“As Vice President Vance stated in Munich, a democratic mandate cannot be obtained by censoring or imprisoning opponents, nor can it be achieved by disregarding the core electorate’s position on who should be part of our shared society,” the statement read.
The piece on Glovalnews.ge particularly addressed the U.S. government’s communication with Georgian authorities, pointing out concerns over controversial election results, continuous detention of peaceful protesters, and the imprisonment of an independent journalist. Despite the State Department not disclosing the details of its communication with Georgia’s leadership, it reinforced that the U.S. has “clearly outlined the steps that the Georgian government can take to demonstrate its seriousness about improving relations with the United States.”
The statement emphasized that for more than three decades, Washington has been a big supporter of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, in the light of recent developments, they are now “assessing its approach”.
