Tbilisi marks 10th anniversary of devastating June 13 flood

Ten years have passed since the tragic flood that struck Tbilisi on June 13, 2015, claiming the lives of 21 people and leaving two others still missing. To commemorate the victims of this devastating natural disaster, a memorial ceremony was held in the capital.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, along with City Council Chairman Zurab Abashidze, Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze, deputy mayors, and other members of the city council, attended the ceremony. They laid flowers at the memorial site and paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

“Ten years have gone by since the terrible tragedy that unfolded on June 13, 2015. Twenty-one lives were lost, and two people remain missing. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” said Mayor Kaladze.

“Though reflecting on that day is painful, what remains unforgettable is the unity and solidarity shown by our citizens. Regardless of age, everyone came together to help our city. We showed the world what collective strength truly means.”

Earlier in the day, Emergency Management Service personnel from the Ministry of Internal Affairs visited the site to honor the memory of the victims. Firefighters also paid their respects, laying flowers at the memorial in remembrance of their fallen compatriots.

The flood, which occurred after torrential rainfall caused the Vere River to overflow, resulted in catastrophic damage across the city. The disaster destroyed homes, roads, tunnels, bridges, and communication infrastructure. Among the hardest-hit areas were Mziuri Park and the Tbilisi Zoo, where many animals also perished.

The Kojori–Samadlo and Akhaldaba–Tskneti road sections were heavily damaged, and thousands of residents were affected by the scale of destruction.
