Prosecutors seek GEL 5,000 bail for man arrested over Telavi hotel altercation

The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a GEL 5,000 bail for Giorgi Chighladze, the man arrested following an altercation at a hotel in Telavi on July 18 during a wedding reception.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the requested preventive measure is in line with standard practice for this category of offense.

“As is the practice for this category of crime, we will request bail in the amount of GEL 5,000, secured by the possibility of pretrial detention if the conditions are violated,” the agency told local media.

Chighladze is expected to be charged under Part 1 of Article 120 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which covers intentional infliction of minor bodily injury. The offense is punishable by a fine, corrective labor for up to six months, house arrest for six months to two years, or imprisonment for one to three years.

As of the latest update, formal charges had not yet been filed.

The incident occurred at the “Agaranis Mamuli” hotel in Telavi, where prosecutors say Chighladze punched a foreign woman in the face during a confrontation.

The woman involved, Alyona Nesteryuk, has denied allegations that she and her friends provoked the altercation. She rejected claims that they poured water or drinks onto wedding guests from a hotel balcony and said neither she nor the four women accompanying her behaved inappropriately. According to her account, she was inside the hotel room and not involved in the dispute with the wedding guests before Chighladze allegedly acted “completely inappropriately.”

Chighladze’s defense, however, maintains that the confrontation began after a group of women staying on the hotel’s third floor repeatedly poured liquid and spat on wedding guests below. According to his lawyer, the incident became so disruptive that the wedding singer, Aleksandre Mrelashvili, said he could no longer continue performing under such conditions and left the venue.

The investigation remains ongoing.
