Newly enthroned Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Shio III, is set to lead his first festive liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) in Tbilisi today, coinciding with the Day of Family Purity.
The service at Sameba is being attended by delegations from various local Orthodox Churches that arrived in Georgia for the Patriarch’s enthronement, as well as members of the Georgian Orthodox Church’s clergy and monastic community. An official delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate also arrived in Georgia yesterday.
As part of the Day of Family Purity observances, a traditional procession will begin at 11:00 a.m. from the St. George Church of Kashveti and proceed to the Holy Trinity Patriarchal Cathedral. The march will include parish communities and clergy, as well as Sunday schools from the Mtskheta-Tbilisi Archdiocese and other dioceses of the Georgian Orthodox Church across the country.
At Sameba Cathedral, worshippers arriving through the prayer procession will receive a blessing from the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia.
On May 11, the Holy Synod elected Shio III as the new Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia with 22 votes, making him the 142nd Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
