Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili commented on the recall of German Ambassador Peter Fischer, saying the move reflects the deterioration of relations caused by the ambassador’s actions and expressing hope for a “reset” in bilateral ties.
Speaking to journalists, Papuashvili said the German authorities likely concluded that Ambassador Fischer “acted as a wall rather than a bridge” between Tbilisi and Berlin.
“It seems that the German authorities have thought about the fact that the current ambassador, unfortunately, instead of acting as a bridge between governments, has chosen to act as a wall between our countries and governments. We saw attacks on the Georgian government and support for radical groups from his side, which was unfortunate,” Papuashvili stated.
He added that the 30-year special partnership between Georgia and Germany had “reached a very low point” during Fischer’s tenure but voiced optimism that the recall could mark a new stage in relations.
“We hope this is a signal for a reset. Of course, we are ready for our relations with Germany to return to where they deserve to be,” he said.
Papuashvili also noted that the ambassador’s recall should serve as a reminder to all diplomats to remain within the bounds of diplomatic conduct.
“This should be a good example for all ambassadors to stay within the framework of their own diplomacy — to ensure that they are a bridge, not a wall, for relations between their country and Georgia,” he remarked.
The German Foreign Ministry confirmed earlier that Ambassador Peter Fischer has been recalled to Berlin for consultations amid rising tensions between the two governments.
