The National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) has confirmed that scabies cases in Georgia occur consistently each year, with no increase observed.
“Scabies occur every year, with no increase in cases. It can affect anyone, but there is no cause for panic,” said Paata Imnadze, Deputy Director-General of the NCDC. He mentioned that approximately 1% of the population contracts scabies annually, a rate similar to trends across Europe.
Scabies is caused by a mite and primarily spreads through close, prolonged skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted indirectly via towels, clothing or bedding. The main symptom of the condition is intense itching.
Imnadze emphasized that treatment is straightforward and effective, usually involving medicated ointments. He recommended that not only those affected but also close contacts and family members seek treatment to prevent reinfection.
