Member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė has condemned the 14-day administrative detention of Georgian journalist Vakho Sanaia over a Facebook post, saying the case demonstrates how quickly Georgia is descending into Kremlin-style repression.
In a post on X, the Lithuanian MEP criticized the country’s political leadership and called on the European Union to respond.
“The 14-day imprisonment of journalist Vakho Sanaia for a Facebook post shows how rapidly Georgia is descending into Kremlin-style repression. At this pace, Bidzina Ivanishvili will soon surpass even his masters in Moscow. The European Union must react. Solidarity with Vakho Sanaia!” Juknevičienė wrote.
The statement comes after the Tbilisi City Court sentenced Sanaia to 14 days of administrative detention over a social media post concerning Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and MP Vladimir Bozhadze.
