Germany appoints Barbara Voss as new ambassador to Georgia

Germany has appointed Barbara Voss as its new ambassador to Georgia, succeeding Peter Fischer, whose term in the country has ended.

Fischer announced the completion of his tenure in Georgia in a post on X on June 30. During his time as ambassador, he frequently criticized what he described as anti-democratic actions by the ruling Georgian Dream party. His statements prompted repeated verbal attacks against him, and he was also verbally confronted in person in Batumi.

Voss, meanwhile, has reiterated Germany’s support for Georgia’s democratic and European aspirations.

“The existing tensions are weighing on Germany’s and the European Union’s relations with Georgia. Nevertheless, Germany’s active support for the country’s democratic and pro-European course remains unwaveringly strong,” Voss wrote.

Before her appointment as ambassador to Georgia, Voss had served as Germany’s consul general in Kolkata, India, since August 2023.

From 2019 to 2023, she served as deputy head of a division at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office responsible for cultural relations with countries in the Maghreb, the Near East and the Middle East. Between 2015 and 2019, she worked on international cooperation in counterterrorism.

Voss previously served at the German Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 2012 to 2015, where she was responsible for economic affairs, and at the German Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, from 2009 to 2012, where she worked on consular and political affairs.

Earlier in her career, she held a position in the human resources division of the Federal Foreign Office from 2006 to 2009. Between 1996 and 2005, she served at German embassies in Lagos, Nigeria, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as well as at Germany’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

From 1992 to 1996, Voss worked at the Federal Foreign Office on issues related to Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

She studied at the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences in Bonn and completed the preparatory program for Germany’s higher foreign service in Berlin in 2005–2006.
