Proposed amendments to the Law on Higher Education indicate that starting September 1, 2025, Georgian language instruction will become mandatory for all bachelor’s programs in Georgian universities. Givi Mikanadze, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Youth Affairs, said that the change will apply to students enrolling after August 1, 2025. Those admitted before that date will not be affected.

“Georgian will be a compulsory subject in all Georgian-language bachelor’s programs across higher education institutions,” Mikanadze stated at a committee session. He added, “We believe more than two months is sufficient for the Ministry of Education to approve the course structure and for universities to prepare their syllabi.”

The amendment also touched upon the teaching of the Abkhaz language in educational institutions located in the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. “This is a clear signal of how highly we value the Abkhaz language,” Mikanadze emphasized.
