Judgement in Nika Gvaramia Case to be Announced Tomorrow

The panel of judges will announce a judgement in the criminal case against the founder of the Mtavari TV Nika Gvaramia, Kakhaber Damenia and Zurab Iashvili tomorrow.

The announcement of the judgement is scheduled for 11:00.

For information, the decision of the Tbilisi City Court has been appealed by both the prosecution and the defense. The lawyers demand an acquittal, while the Prosecutor’s Office demands that both Nika Gvaramia and Zurab Iashvili be found guilty in all episodes.

The court of first instance found Nika Gvaramia and Kakhaber Damenia guilty, while Zurab Iashvili was acquitted.

The city court sentenced Nika Gvaramia to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment on May 16.

Tbilisi City Court judge Lasha Chkhikvadze sentenced Gvaramia to 3 and a half years in prison on May 16.

The prosecutor’s office accused Gvaramia, during the directorship of Rustavi 2, of “abuse of authority against the legal interests of the broadcasting company and use of a large amount of money belonging to him in his official capacity.”

His arrest was criticized both inside and outside the country. Among them, the MEPs repeatedly responded to Gvaramia’s imprisonment.

Tbilisi City Court Judge Lasha Chkhikvadze was removed from the planned program in the US by the United States Embassy after announcing the verdict in the Gvaramia case.
