On April 6, Georgian police arrested Saba Sordia, a journalist with the online media outlet Indigo, on administrative charges for allegedly disobeying a lawful order from a police officer, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.
Following his arrest, Sordia was taken to the Digomi detention facility, where he met with his lawyer.
His lawyer reported that during the arrest, Sordia was subjected to homophobic remarks by officers due to his wearing of an earring.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of arrests of journalists in Georgia. In January 2025, veteran journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer, leading to significant international concern and calls for her release.
Additionally, during pro-European protests in late 2024, over 90 instances of violence against journalists by law enforcement were recorded, with many journalists facing administrative charges, fines, or brief detentions.
The repeated arrests and reported mistreatment of journalists have raised concerns among media organizations and human rights groups about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Georgia.
