Hungary’s parliament has voted to remove President Tamás Sulyok from office, ending the tenure of a head of state widely regarded as a close ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who lost power in April after 16 years in office.
The move came after Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s Tisza party used its two-thirds parliamentary majority to pass the 17th amendment to the constitution.
The constitutional amendment not only ended Sulyok’s term as president but also removed Péter Polt from his position as head of the Constitutional Court. The changes were approved by parliament as part of the new government’s institutional reforms.
