The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Swedish Parliament hosted a hearing featuring the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, Nikoloz Samkharadze. During the hearing, Samkharadze addressed Georgia’s ongoing efforts towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration, as well as the progress made thus far in implementing the 12 recommendations put forward by the European Union. He emphasized the critical importance of granting Georgia the status of an EU candidate country by the end of 2023.
The hearing also touched upon the situation in the occupied regions of Georgia, namely Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region. Discussions centered on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and the significance of Georgia’s peacekeeping initiatives in facilitating a peaceful resolution. In addition, the parties deliberated on the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and its far-reaching implications for the security of Georgia and Europe as a whole.
“A significant and engaging discussion was held at the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Swedish Parliament, during which important issues concerning Georgia were deliberated upon. The discourse included a thorough examination of Georgia’s aspirations towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration, as well as the progress made in implementing the 12 recommendations of the European Union. The Swedish parliamentarians expressed keen interest in the situation prevailing in the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, in addition to the perceived threats emanating from Russia. During the discussion, questions were posed regarding the country’s internal political processes, ongoing reforms, and efforts towards strengthening defense capabilities, all of which were addressed in a comprehensive and exhaustive manner.
