The National Food Agency declares quarantine in Gurjaani Municipality after rabies is confirmed on a farm near the village of Chalaubani, close to the Iori River.
The Agency says the farm keeps around 1,000 small cattle, 17 large cattle, two horses and six dogs.
It adds that on May 14, one dog showing aggressive behavior bit five other dogs, one sheep and one head of large cattle. The dog later died, after which laboratory samples were sent to the State Laboratory of Agriculture. Examination protocol N3668 confirmed rabies.
The National Food Agency says an investigation found the animals had not been vaccinated against rabies. Under Georgian law, unvaccinated animals suspected of infection must be immediately vaccinated, and a six-month monitoring period is required under the owner’s responsibility.
The Agency states that quarantine has now been introduced in the infected and surrounding risk areas, while rabies control measures are underway, including compulsory vaccination of animals, disinfection, restrictions on animal movement, and ongoing health monitoring.
