GD Chair: The President blatantly and deliberately violated the Constitution of Georgia

The President blatantly and deliberately violated the Constitution of Georgia. It has been said many times that the Constitution was violated only formally and it was not a big deal. This is the wrong attitude. There is a non-European attitude towards the Constitution, – Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of Georgian Dream, stated at the Constitutional Court session, where the impeachment submission of Salome Zurabishvili is being considered.

Kobakhidze claimed that the President of Georgia fundamentally opposed the existing system of governance.

“We believe that the President grossly and intentionally violated the Constitution of Georgia. It has been said many times that the Constitution was violated only formally and it was not a big deal. First of all, this is already the wrong attitude. It is a non-European attitude towards the Constitution. Formal violation of the Constitution is the wrong term. There may be a less serious topic related to the violation of the Constitution, but in this case, the President of Georgia fundamentally opposed the system of governance established by the Constitution of Georgia,” said Kobakhidze.

The basis for the initiation of the impeachment process against President Zurabishvili by the ruling team was the foreign visits made by her, to which the government had not given consent. The issue of impeachment of the President was decided at the meeting of the political council of the Georgian Dream party on September 1. The Constitutional Court has a one-month deadline to prepare its opinion. In case of a positive decision by the court, 100 deputies’ votes are needed to dismiss the President, which the majority of Georgian Dream does not have.
