At today’s hearing the court will rule on three issues: the admissibility of evidence the review of preventive measures applied to the detainees and whether the case should move to substantive consideration.

The defendants in the case are: Vladimir Gvelesiani Zurab Chavchanidze Sergo Megrelishvili Giorgi Rurua Amiran Dolishvili Anton Vardanidze Giorgi Korkia Aleksandre Chilachava Genadi Kupreishvili Lasha Ivanadze Levan Jikia Sulkhan Tugushi Khvicha Gogokhia and Ramaz Mumladze.

They are charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Georgia. Article 19-222 Part 2 Sub-paragraph ‘a’ concerns the attempted takeover and blockade of strategic and critically important facilities carried out by a group. Article 225 Part 2 covers participation in group violence.

The court’s decisions at this stage will determine whether the case advances to a full merits review while also reassessing the current detention conditions and restrictions applied to the accused.
