Following a chaotic session in parliament on Tuesday, at least three Serbian MPs were injured after opposition lawmakers threw smoke grenades. One of the injured politicians suffered a stroke and is in critical condition, per the BBC report.
The source of the upheaval was the growing tensions amid student-led demonstrations, first sparked by a railway station roof collapse that killed 15 people four months ago. Ever since the indecent, the protests have evolved into a broader movement posing a great challenge to the Serbian government.
The violence that erupted at the parliamentary session was broadcasted live on television and depicted politicians clashing with security and using tear gas inside the chamber. A banner saying ‘Serbia is rising up for the regime to fall’ was lying on the floor as a symbol of defiance.
