Carl Hartzell: Never too Late to Sign Important Roadmap for Democratic Reforms

EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell responded to the signing of the April 19 agreement by the United National Movement, saying that it’s never too late to sign such an important document.

“Today, the UNM party Chairman Nika Melia signed the 19 April agreement, mediated by the European Union.

“This means now that 147 out of 150 elected Members of the Georgian Parliament have, at one stage or another, supported this agreement and all of its contents. Of course at different times. But I believe it is never too late to sign up to what is, essentially, an important roadmap for democratic reforms. And arguably it is not too late either to recommit to it.

“It is my conviction that these reforms are, after all, for the benefit of all Georgian citizens. For this reason, the European Union believes that the full implementation of all reforms set out in this agreement is in Georgia’s national interest.

“We will remain ready to work with everyone who is committed to their realization,” said the Ambassador.

“It is impossible, the Georgian Dream will not return to the agreement,” Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated later.

Nika Melia, Chairman of the United National Movement, and members of the party, have finally signed the political agreement document initiated by President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

To this end, Melia and party members visited the EU Delegation Office on September 2.

For the record, the Georgian Dream annulled the April 19 agreement on July 28. The party named the fact that the document was not signed by the main opposition party, the National Movement, as the main reason behind their decision.
