On the 105th anniversary of the Soviet occupation of Georgia, Sweden’s Ambassador to Georgia, Anna Lyberg, joined fellow ambassadors in paying tribute to the Georgian junkers who fought for the country’s freedom in February 1921.
The commemorative ceremony took place at the Kojori Junkers Memorial where diplomats laid wreaths in honor of the young military cadets who resisted the advancing Red Army during the Soviet invasion.
The junkers, military academy cadets, are remembered for their role in defending Georgia’s short-lived independence during the 1921 hostilities. The anniversary marks 105 years since Soviet forces occupied the country, bringing an end to the Democratic Republic of Georgia.
Ambassador Lyberg reaffirmed Sweden’s continued support for Georgia, emphasizing the country’s commitment to Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
