Heavy rain, thunderstorms and landslide risks forecast across Georgia through June 22

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and landslide risks forecast across Georgia through June 22

The National Environmental Agency (NEA) has warned that unstable weather conditions are expected across most of Georgia from late June 19 through June 22, bringing intermittent rainfall and the possibility of heavy downpours in some regions.

Agency says the adverse weather may be accompanied by thunderstorms, hail and strong winds.

Forecasters say the expected precipitation could significantly affect river levels, which are already elevated in many parts of the country.

“Water levels remain high in Georgia’s rivers. Heavy downpours could push water levels to dangerous levels across the Enguri, Rioni, Aragvi, Iori and Alazani river basins,” the agency said in a statement.

The NEA warned that intense rainfall could also trigger flash floods on smaller rivers and increase the risk of landslides and mudflows in hilly and mountainous areas.

The agency assessed the overall risk level as high and urged the public to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone and mountainous regions, as weather conditions may deteriorate over the coming days.
