Zelensky marks four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion, vows Ukraine will not be broken

Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a powerful address to the nation on the fourth anniversary of the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, declaring that Ukraine has defended its independence and will continue its fight for a just and lasting peace.

“Today marks exactly four years since Putin started his three-day push to take Kyiv,” Zelensky said, referring to Russia’s failed attempt to quickly seize the Ukrainian capital in February 2022. “And that says a great deal about our resistance.”

Speaking from the presidential complex on Bankova Street — including the bunker where he coordinated the first days of wartime leadership — Zelensky recalled early conversations with international leaders. He referenced a widely known exchange with then-US President Joe Biden, who had offered assistance to evacuate him from Kyiv. “I need ammunition, not a ride,” Zelensky repeated, underscoring Ukraine’s decision to resist rather than flee.

The President acknowledged that Ukrainians felt fear and shock in the first hours of the invasion but emphasized that the nation made a conscious choice to defend its sovereignty. “Our people did not raise a white flag — they defended the blue and yellow one,” he said.

Zelensky paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers and civilians alike, describing how recruitment centers filled, volunteers formed living barricades, and communities defended their cities and villages. He noted that despite blockades and attacks, Ukraine continued to function — securing weapons, delivering medicine and food, and mobilizing global support.

The President listed some of the most tragic chapters of the war, including Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, attacks on residential buildings and maternity wards, and the bombing of civilian infrastructure. “Ukrainians will not forget,” he said, condemning continued Russian aggression and those who, in his words, still cooperate with Moscow.

At the same time, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s military evolution over the past four years — from relying on foreign-supplied body armor and anti-tank weapons to producing more than three million FPV drones annually and developing its own long-range strike capabilities. He referenced key battlefield milestones, including the defense of Kyiv, the liberation of Kherson, operations in the Kharkiv region, and the sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva.

“Putin has not achieved his goals. He has not broken Ukrainians. He has not won this war,” Zelenskyy declared.

The President stressed that Russia continues targeting civilian infrastructure and waging energy warfare, calling the current winter one of the most difficult in Ukraine’s history. Nevertheless, he praised Ukrainians for enduring nightly attacks, maintaining unity, and continuing daily life under extreme pressure.

Zelensky also pointed to diplomatic and political achievements, including Ukraine’s EU candidate status, the return of prisoners of war, and sustained international military and financial support. He thanked leaders from Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia who have stood with Ukraine since the start of the invasion.

Addressing ongoing peace negotiations, Zelensky emphasized that any future agreement must ensure real security guarantees and must not undermine the sacrifices made by Ukrainians. “History is watching us closely,” he said. “The agreement must not simply be signed — it must be accepted by Ukrainians.”

In an emotional segment, the President honored fallen soldiers and national heroes, stating that thousands gave their lives so that Ukraine may live.

Concluding his speech, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s resilience and determination. “We have defended our independence. We have not lost our statehood. Ukraine exists not just on the map,” he said. “We have preserved Ukraine, and we will do everything to secure peace and justice.”

“Glory to Ukraine,” he ended.
