PM Kobakhidze on German ambassador recall: Fischer damaged Georgian-German relations

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the recall of German Ambassador Peter Fischer was a pragmatic decision, noting that Fischer’s presence in Georgia “no longer made any sense” and that he had damaged bilateral relations.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze stated, “He was the first German ambassador to damage Georgian-German relations. I am confident that these relations will be restored very soon; the key is to appoint a dignified person as Germany’s ambassador in the future.”

Kobakhidze emphasized that prior to Fischer’s tenure, Georgian-German relations had been developing positively, but under his ambassadorship, “significant damage was done.” He expressed optimism that the strong foundation of bilateral relations would allow them to recover quickly.

Germany recalled Ambassador Fischer for consultations on October 19, a move interpreted by Tbilisi as a necessary step to reset diplomatic ties and ensure future cooperation.
