8 people detained during protest in Batumi

Irakli Dgebuadze, head of the Batumi City Division of the Adjara Police Department, says that eight individuals were detained during a protest in Batumi.

He stated that all detainees were arrested under administrative procedures for offenses stipulated in Articles 166 and 173.

“All individuals detained by the police were apprehended for administrative offenses under Articles 166 and 173, with some detained solely under Article 173 for insulting and resisting police officers. A total of eight people have been detained,” Dgebuadze said in a live interview with TV Pirveli.

Tensions escalated several times yesterday during the protest near the Adjara Government House in Batumi. The initial confrontation occurred when Elene Khoshtaria, a leader of the Coalition for Change party, attempted to put up stickers, leading to her arrest. Opposition politician Giorgi Kirtadze was also detained.

Opposition parties say other detainees include Shushana Matsaberidze, a member of Droa, Luka Natsvlishvili, a member of Strong Georgia, and Elizbar Chkhikvadze, a member of Gakharia – For Georgia. Additionally, the edition Batumelebi reported that its founder and director Mzia Amaghlobeli and Guram Murvanidze, an operator and photographer for the publication, were also detained.
