Ministry of Internal Affairs buys new water cannons

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has acquired new water cannons, Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri announced yesterday during a press briefing.

Gomelauri stated that the Ministry purchased three units of different modifications, highlighting the need for updated equipment: “We bought new machines. The previous water cannons were purchased in 2006 or 2007 by the previous administration, and it was time to upgrade. We now have several new water cannons available.”

He also mentioned enhancements to the special forces’ arsenal, including automatic firearms and pistols.

Regarding the use of water jets and tear gas during crowd control, the Minister clarified that the regulations have changed. “It is incorrect to say that simultaneous use is prohibited. An order from 2015 was revised in 2021, allowing the practice seen in European countries. Special forces can use both water and gas, but not when children or pregnant women are present. In cases of serious threats, both can be deployed together.”

The ‘Nodar Meladze on Saturday’ program on Pirveli TV reported that during the spring protests against the “Russian” law, tear gas was mixed with water jets and used against demonstrators. However, the Ministry asserts that the Law of Georgia “On the Police” does not forbid the simultaneous use of water jets and tear gas.

A ban on this simultaneous use is outlined in order N1002, which sets guidelines for police conduct during gatherings and protests.
