Gakharia: For Georgia not to sign “Georgian Charter” offered by President

The Gakharia for Georgia party will not sign the “Georgian Charter” offered to the parties by the president.

The party clams that they have consulted with the president and join part of the reforms stipulated by the “Georgian Charter” and take a political commitment to support the implementation of these reforms.

However, regarding the issue of holding extraordinary elections provided by the charter and, accordingly, the formation of a temporary government, the party believes that the discussion on this issue will lead to a political and legal dead end.

“Speaking of extraordinary elections damages the significance of the October 26 elections as a decisive election. Our team cannot take responsibility for this issue and the formation of the government in the proposed form, therefore, it cannot sign the presented document.

“We understand the value of unity, but such unity must be based on a common goal. Such a goal for all of us today is primarily to hold elections in a free, fair and competitive environment. Therefore, we consider it the primary task to unite to protect the choices of Georgia’s citizens. The role of the president, as the only remaining independent constitutional institution, is crucial in protecting the elections and uniting around this goal,” the party said.

As noted in the party, the role of the president should be unifying not only political forces, but also society, youth, international partners, around the goal of protecting the elections.

“Unity should be created around the president, which will transform the national protest energy of the society into a concrete action plan to protect the votes of Georgian citizens at the polling stations,” the party said.

On May 26, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, presented a plan to the public which includes  steps that the signatories of the document should take after winning the elections.

The President noted that the steps mentioned in the “Georgian Charter” are necessary not only for the European integration of Georgia, but also for the establishment of a democratic and fair state.

Political parties signed the “Georgian Charter” presented by the President of Georgia today.
