The UK is seriously concerned by the proposed draft law – this cannot be right, British ambassador Mark Clayton writes on Twitter regarding the “Foreign influence transparency” bill.
“Today, I spoke at the event on the adoption of the 4th National Action Plan of Georgia for the implementation of the UNSC Resolution on Women, Peace & Security. I am pleased that the UK supported UN Women Georgia to work with the government of Georgia and women representing local civil society organisations in development of this plan. I made it very clear, that if the proposed law on “Transparency of Foreign Influence” were in place now CSOs & women activists supported by the UK in delivering Georgian Government’s reconciliation agenda would be stigmatized as “foreign agents”. This cannot be right. The UK is seriously concerned by the proposed draft law and urges the Government of Georgia to take on board feedback from CSOs, media and Georgia’s international partners as it considers next steps,” the ambassador wrote.
The Parliament is starting consideration of foreign agents bills. The draft laws entitled – “On the transparency of foreign influence” and “On the registration of foreign agents” will be discussed today, at the joint meeting of the Foreign Relations and Defense and Security Committees of the Parliament.
