Figure skater Morisi Kvitelashvili Wins First ISU Grand Prix Title for Georgia

Georgian figure skater Morisi Kvitelashvili made history for Georgia by winning the Grand Prix of the International Skating Union (ISU) in Sochi on Saturday.

He opened his skating routine to the sound of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, followed by ‘My Way.’

He then went on to demonstrate a ‘quad Salchow-double toe, a triple Axel, quad toe-triple toe and followed with three more triples,’ the ISU reported, noting that he made one mistake falling on a quad toeloop’.

“Not everything worked in my program, but I tried hard, I fought and I am happy to be on the podium,” , Kvitelashvili told ISU reporters. “We are making history and we have other great skaters in our team. We’re going to have a complete team at the Olympic Games in Beijing, which is also a first.”

His Russian rival Mikhail Kolyada was awarded silver, while Japanese skater Kazuki Tomono took home bronze.
