Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has reappointed Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister following the resignation of the government, in line with the country’s constitutional procedures after the parliamentary elections.
The move came as Armenia’s newly elected parliament, formed after the 7 June parliamentary elections, convened for its first session on 2 August.
Under Armenia’s Constitution, the government is required to resign on the day the newly elected parliament holds its first sitting. In accordance with this requirement, Pashinyan submitted the government’s resignation to President Khachaturyan, who formally accepted it.
The Constitution then requires the president to appoint as prime minister the candidate nominated by the political force holding a parliamentary majority.
The ruling Civil Contract party, which secured a majority in parliament, nominated Pashinyan for another term, and President Khachaturyan subsequently reappointed him as prime minister.
