More than 250,000 flee as wildfires rage across Spain and France

More than 250,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as massive wildfires continue to burn across Spain and France, overwhelming firefighting efforts and prompting unprecedented emergency measures in both countries.

Around 70,000 people were evacuated from central Spain, while approximately 197,000 fled their homes in France, including tens of thousands of residents from the wine-producing city of Bordeaux and surrounding areas. The fires have been fuelled by extreme heat, drought and strong winds, making them difficult to contain.

Spain has declared a national emergency over the wildfires for the first time in its history, allowing the central government to coordinate the response and deploy additional resources. Meanwhile, France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the mass evacuations as “probably” the largest peacetime evacuation the country has ever experienced.

Thousands of firefighters, supported by aircraft and military personnel, remain engaged in efforts to stop the blazes, with authorities warning that weather conditions continue to pose a serious challenge. European countries have also provided firefighting assistance as the fires threaten homes, businesses and critical infrastructure in both nations.
